DSEA Read Across America Student Contests 2015 Sponsored by the DSEA, the Gannett Media Education program, and FuturTech Consulting Book Focus: “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss Theme: Standing Up for Others We urge Delaware’s public school students to submit an entry. Contest Rules -Individual students, not groups, should submit poster drawings or essay entries. - Posters should be no larger than 11x17 in size and reflect the theme of standing up for others. -Essays (high school students only) should be 600-800 words in length. As the Lorax stood up for the trees and animals of the valley who could not stand up for themselves, discuss someone in history who has stood up for others. The essay must have in-text citations, follow the APA format, and have a references page. The in-text citations should contain the author, date of publication, and the page number or site URL. Please consult your school librarian for assistance with the APA format. -Video entries about standing up for those who cannot speak or stand up for themselves (and why this is important) may be submitted by an individual student, group or a class of students who worked together on the project. Videos should be a maximum of three minutes in length and include a title as well as a credit listing of the students who worked on the project and the names of any teachers or paraprofessionals who advised or helped. Please submit videos on a DVD or flash drive in one of the following formats: .MOV, .MP4, .H264. Entries can also indicate a URL address for YouTube. Only one video entry per student, group, or class. All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form that can be found at www.dsea.org/content/read-across-america. Contest Divisions -K-3 Division Poster drawing -Grades 4-8 Division Poster drawing or video entry -Grades 9-12 Division Essay or video entry Contest Prizes All winners will be featured in an ad in The News Journal on or around March 2nd, 2015 – Read Across America Day. First Place Prizes: K-3: A class visit from the Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss logo items, and a gift certificate 4-8 & 9-12: Gift certificate, Dr. Seuss logo items Second Place Prizes K-3, 4-8, & 9-12: Gift certificate and Dr. Seuss logo items Grand Prize Winner: The grand prize winner will receive a gift certificate and a special prize package/event from DSEA. It is left to the discretion of DSEA as to what that package/event is, depending on the age of the winner. All winning artwork, essays, and videos will be posted on DSEA’s website. How to Enter: Mail entries to Read Across America Contest, DSEA, 136 E. Water Street, Dover, DE 19901. Do not deliver or mail them to the News Journal or FuturTech Consulting.
